Wyatts first time coloring with markers.

Here goes nothin...... This past July we all laid down for a nice afternoon nap. Rhett (18months) is his crib and Wyatt (3 1/2) in his bed. My husband Brandon and I thought it was safe to lay down and take a snooze while we had a few mins. It was hot outside and cool inside so we didn't take long to fall asleep. We still have the baby monitor plugged up because our boys share a room and I like to be able to hear what is going on in there at all times so what is the worst thing that could happen right?

After an hour or so I heard the boys on the monitor, but they were just talking and giggling so I thought, how sweet, my boys love playing together. Well, I did the unspeakable and dozed back off with warm fuzzy thoughts of my perfect little boys. What felt like a few minutes later I smelled what would be the beginning of a small, short term nightmare for me...... PERMANENT MARKER!!! I was scared to open my eyes! And that feeling was justified because when I did, this is what I saw.

Naturally I was sick to my stomach and couldn't bare to look at the rest of the damage my precious little angel had done my house. I woke my husband up and asked him to please go and check the boys room. I just couldn't go in there. When I got up and followed him shortly after I saw the artwork that Wyatt had created in our kitchen. As I looked around the room slowly I saw that he had written on every different kind of surface in there. We had marker on our fridge, dishwasher, cabinets, hardwood floor and our stove. I had a friend of mine tell me, while I was still in shock, "can't you just see little Wyatt coloring on one surface first and liking how it felt and then slowly and quietly trying it to see how it felt on each of the other surfaces". I am glad that she could see right away the texture lesson in this. HA. Here is a picture of what caught my eye as I walked in the kitchen.

(check out little Brother Rhett) you will see him again in a minute.

So when Brandon walked out of the bedroom red faced and not saying a word I knew it was bad. I walked slowly while holding my breath into the boys room. Right above Rhett's bed was a mural that was drawn by not only one of my boys but both of my boys. Notice the flowing motions, those are Wyatt's. Then notice the shorter dotted motion. Those are Rhett's. Isn't that sweet. They shared for the first time in 18 months. That is one for the baby book!!!

So yes, my 3 1/2 year old climbed into the baby bed and was sharing the permanent marker with his 18 month old brother. I am not going to post all of the pictures but Wyatt colored on everything in his room. Here is a list of things I can recall right now: tv, dresser, changing table, carpet, pillows, sheets, blankets, his self and I am sure I am forgetting one....... OH YEAH! HIS LITTLE BROTHER!!!! I found marker everywhere on Wyatt and Rhett's bodies. It was even in Rhett's little butt crack and on his butt cheeks and his diaper was still on. I am not sure I really even want to know. Wyatt had it on his toe nails too and said that he had painted them.

MomMom and Grampa came to their rescue!
I was panicked. I didn't know what to do to even begin to get this off. I posted my emergency on Facebook and had tons of responses of ways to clean this mess up. I was getting good advice while at the same time feeling better that I wasn't the first to go through this. Tonya aka MomMom saved their rears by getting most of this removed with Goof Off while Grampa smiled for the camera. The reminders we still have of this are the wall, the carpet, the pillow, sheet and you can't forget the shark shirt from the first pic. This is one that we will save as a hand-me-down for Rhett.
I am sure that some of you are wondering how in the world he had time to do this without being supervised? Well, he knew exactly what he was doing when he woke up because he didn't make a sound. And the giggling I heard on the baby monitor was probably when Wyatt stuck the marker down Rhetts crack!!!
As Grampa always says and I get to say now........ CAN'T HAVE NOTHIN!

  3. I remember when you posted your facebook emergency. It was very funny, to observe from the outside, although I know it wasnt funny to you at the time. I know the feeling. I have been very blessed that my little ones have never got ahold of permanate marker, although they arent grown yet so there is still a chance, but mabye they are old enough to know better?? Maybe???

  4. Jenny, I picked up this book today and started reading it. It's the one I ordered, "To Train Up a Child." by Michael and Debi Pearl. I like it! Then I read this..."I know a mother who must call a baby-sitter every time she takes a shower. You should even be able to take a nap and expect to find the house in order when you awake." I thought of you! : ) I'll read it and then you can read it and then I think we should pass it to Kristin and so on. Just wanted to share it.
